About Caddel Equine Therapy Center

Steve & Linda Caddel have a lifetime of experience in the management of horses.

Steve’s technical expertise provides a progressive yet conservative approach to overseeing the rehabilitation and recovery of our special equine patients. Steve has been in hands-on management of several prominent equine operations both in Kentucky and in Texas. He specialized in the management and sales preparation of yearlings. For the past 14 years, Steve has been a technical advisor to professional horsemen on the farm and at the racetrack for Lexington-based Farmers Feed Mill. During this time Steve has developed and managed the growth monitoring program for young horses, a joint venture between Farmers Feed Mill and Kentucky Equine Research. Additionally he participated in the development of Hallway Feeds highly touted Race 13R and has co-authored several scientific papers on management and nutritional topics.

Linda oversees the day-to-day operation of this special family business. Since her youth showing Quarter Horses in Iowa to overseeing editorial excellence in Horseman Magazine in Houston, TX to orchestrating the management of Caddel Equine Therapy Center, Linda’s passion has been progressive, articulate management of high-maintenance horses. For Linda, it’s the smallest of details in care and therapies that separate Caddel Equine from the rest of the field.

PROCEDURES:
Every horse at Caddel Equine is treated as an individual. We insist on the finest feed and hay available. Our feed is manufactured locally by Farmers Feed Mill, delivered to the farm each week within hours of being bagged. Each formula is carefully formulated by on-staff nutritionists with guidance of Kentucky Equine Research. Our hay is alfalfa/orchard grass of uncompromising quality. Each horse has a diet customized to his requirements.

Attention to Details: Meticulous records are kept on each horse. Vaccinations, farrier, dewormings, dental work, follow-up veterinarian visits, transportation to and from the hospitals, vanning arrangements are a few of the services we offer. We make every effort to accommodate any special needs of each horse.

Each post-surgical horse is managed to exhaustive detail according to veterinary instructions. All follow-up care is carefully coordinated with the discharging veterinarian and hospital to assure utmost accuracy and effectiveness in the rehabilitation process. The horse’s manager/owner/trainer is kept apprised of each horse’s progress by telephone, fax, letter or e-mail. In addition, clients are encouraged to contact Linda or Steve at anytime for updates or information.

Safety to horse and horseman are critical.

FACILITIES:

Layup Barn: Features spacious stalls with front and back screen doors looking out on a bark-lined indoor walking/jogging ring. The barn is lined on both sides with windows that can be opened for maximum ventilation in warm weather, closed in cold. The windows allow the barn to remain very bright. In addition the barn is equipped with abundant lighting in stalls and hallways.

Broodmare Barn: Features spacious stalls with front and back screen doors. In addition, rear doors to each stall have a storm door to keep stalls dry yet ventilated. The barn has two foaling boxes with observation windows into a heated lab, complete with lavatory and shower. When not in use for foaling mares, these stalls are available to our patients requiring extra room. The barn features a wash rack and lab area.

Training Track: 3/8 mile track with a river-sand base that is maintained to a high standard. The track has an inside and outside rail and allows Caddel Farm staff to safely exercise a recovering equine athlete. The track follows the gentle slopes of the Scott County terrain which permits us to work a horse conservatively while using the natural lay-of-the-land to build cardio-vascular fitness without pounding a horse’s legs unnecessarily.

Grass Gallops: There is an ample grass tract around the outside of the training track to provide easy and safe jogs for our patients.

Equicizer: Located conveniently outside our Layup Barn is our 6-horse carousel walker. Once acclimated to the walker, a horse can work from a 350 ft/min walk to a gallop. This reversible walker provides variety to our rehabilitation/training program.

Round Pen: Beside the Equicizer is a round pen which provides exercise in a limited area for our patients just beginning turnout. In addition, we use the round pen to start our young horses or to do some forced-exericse for our sales prepping horses.
